Peanuts - Linus - Bob Balaban

Another TTM (through the mail) autograph. Bob Balaban is a well known character actor who has appeared in many films including: A Mighty Wind, Close encounters of the Third Kind, Grand Budapest Hotel, Midnight Cowboy. One of Balaban earliest roles was on Broadway in "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" portraying Linus. 

I enjoyed doing the sketch and appreciated Mr Balaban fulfilling my request for an autograph.

Peanuts : 2025 Royal Mail

Royal Mail are marking the 75th anniversary of the internationally loved comic strip 'Peanuts' with a set of eight stamps. The stamps, all 1st class and in se-tenant pairs, feature images in a British theme including the classic Snoopy pose on a Royal Mail pillar box, playing football, Charlie Brown and Snoopy 'enjoying' the British weather and a birthday tea party.

Featured on the stamps are Charlie Brown, Snoopy Woodstock, Franklin, Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, Sally, Peppermint Patty and Marcie all in very distinct British elements

This 2001 stamp pane commemorates the comic strip “Peanuts” with the character Snoopy. Drawn by Charles M. Schulz (1922–2000), “Peanuts” began in syndication on October 2, 1950. The installment published on Sunday, February 13, 2000, was the last original comic strip by Schulz, who died the previous day. The stamp was designed by Carl Herrman of Carlsbad, CA

The Skylab Medical Experiment Altitude Test, or SMEAT, was a 56-day simulation of an American Skylab space mission from 26 July-19 September 1972 at NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas. The astronauts in the test were Bob Crippen, Karol Bobko, and William Thornton, who simulated space experiments, housekeeping and leisure activities in a hypobaric chamber. SMEAT provided a baseline for the in-orbit portion of biomedical experiments on Skylab.

Charles Schulz donated the character of Snoopy to promote spaceflight safety and inspire the public, leading to the creation of the Silver Snoopy Award and his role as a safety mascot and space program symbol. The image of Snoopy was used in various ways by NASA since the Apollo Space Program

Business envelopes - The Comics

Even though I have slowed down on obtaining hand-drawn art, I still research information for my collection. Since both of my parents worked for an envelope manufacturing company, and my father was a stamp collector, I was always had an interest in illustrated envelopes. In the late 1890s the envelopes were decorated with fantastic engraved images representing the sender's business. Recent improvements in methods of communications (e-mail, text, facebook, instagram etc) have made it easier to reach someone quickly, but the message is sterile and lacks anticipation of having to wait and then open the envelope to reveal the message. Therefore I still have a fascination for certain envelope that have been placed through the mail. 

Some of these business envelope offer a postage meter that features a slogan that may represent their business interests. I recently came across a few envelopes that are comic related:

Henry is a comic strip created in 1932 by Carl Anderson. The title character is a young bald boy who is mostly mute in the comics

Alberto Morales - Snoopy Luchador

Ablert Morales is an American illustrator who has worked on multiple series for Marvel-Upper Deck, including movie card sets: Captain America 75th Anniversary, X-Men and Spider-Man Homecoming. Morales is also a SELAH Award winning illustrator for the young adult fantasy fiction book series "F'lorna of Rodesh"

HIs comic strip "Super Impacto vs the World" is curated int eh Billy Ireland Cartoon Museum alongside strip guests Charles Schultz (Peanuts), Til Keane (Family Circus) and Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes)..

With everything Snoopy has accomplished in the Peanuts comic (astronaut, pilot, baseball player) I would not be surprised to learn he is a Luche Libre wrestler.

Kyle Baker - Charlie Brown Deadpool

Kyle Baker - cartoonist, comic book writer-artist and animator, known for his graphic novels (Why I hate Saturn) and for the 2000s revival of the TV Series Plastic Man. HIs influences were Jack Kirby, Norman Rockwell and Jack Davis. He also spent a lot off time reading the newspaper strips, which included Peanuts, Li'l Abner, Pogo and Blondie. 

My original thought was to ask for a Plastic Man sketch, but then I came across a Star Wars card featuring Baker's art. The back of the card had a "Charlie Brown" style portrait. That's when I decided to request a Charlie Brown style sketch of any super hero he wanted to choose. When I returned to pick up my sketch, I was handed a Charlie Brown Deadpool with a Spider-Man Woodstock.

Kyle also adds an imprint of his Quality Jollity logo in the lower corner

Baker has won numerous Eisner Awards and Harvey Awards for his work in the comics field

Tom Lyle - Airboy

Tom Lyle became a fan favorite working on Starman for DC Comics and the first Robin limited series, with Chuck Dixon.  Lyle is credited with co-creating the third Electrocutioner, with Dixon for Detective Comics in 1992. Other titles for DC include Green Lantern, Batman, Teen Titans

Lyle has also penciled issues for The Comet for Impact Comics; Blood of Dracula for Apple Comics

For Marvel he created the character Annex, for The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #27, with Jack C Harris. Lyle also created the original blue hoodie and red spandex costume worn by the Scarlet Spider. Other titles for Marvel include Punisher, Daredevil, X-Men, Iron man and Warlock

My goal in meeting Lyle was to obtain an Airboy sketch on a Snoopy first day cover. Of course Snoopy is featured in his World War I pilot guise getting ready to fight the Red Baron. Lyle provided pencils for The Air Fighters Meet Sgt. Strike Special (1988), Airboy (1986) Airboy Archive (2014) 

Airboy is an aviator hero, originally published by Hillman Periodicals, 1942. The character was created by writers Charles Biro and Dick Wood and artist Al Camy. The character returned to the comics during the 1980s written by Chuck Dixon for Eclipse Comics.

The original Airboy was assisted by a Franciscan monk Brother Francis Martier, who created a maneuverable prototype airplane that can flap it's wings like a bird. Airbus named the plane Birdie, and together they assisted the Allied Forces during the war. Lyle made it a point to include Birdie in the sketch...

Jeff Shultz, long time Archie artist, has added Charles Schutlz' Peanuts from Boom Studios to his resume.  Boom Studios brought the Peanuts characters back to the comic book format in 2012...

Jeff was a ghost artist for the Tom and Jerry newspaper comic strips...

When Charles Schulz died many comic strips and editorial cartoonists paid tribute to what they envisioned as either a Peanuts final strip or their goodbyes. None of them came close to Weapon Brown....

the world of comics in a post-apocalyptic world. The adventures, adult in context, follow Weapon Brown and his pet dog Snoop in a parody of today's comics. With a cybernetic arm and plaz gun, Brown runs across many altered comic strip characters and fights against the villainous organization known as the Syndicate. Weapon Brown runs as a web comic, and his adventures have been printed in comic book format as well. A signed copy of the book is shown.

I dearly love Peanuts and I also enjoy the parody.

Charles Schulz - Snoopy

Schulz created one of the most popular comics when Peanuts hit the newspapers Oct 2, 1950.

Schulz's first comic was called Lil Folks (1947-1950) running in the St.Paul Pioneer Press. Schulz approached United Feature Syndicate about publishing his strip, and with some changes Peanuts was born. Charlie Brown is the main character, a lovable loser, but one who never gave up.

His dog Snoopy started as an ordinary dog, but has become one of the most recognized cartoon characters in the world. As Snoopy's character evolved he became more human-like, playing shortstop on Charlie Brown's team, flying his dog-house as a World War I ace pilot, playing tennis, serving in the French Foreign Legion...

Charles M Schulz has received many honors including the National Cartoonist Society Humor Comic Strip Award, the Elzie Segar Award, The Reuben Award and the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award. The Lester patrick Trophy for his contributions to the sport of hockey. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.......

Schulz announced his retirement with the final daily strip being published on January 3, 2000. The final Sunday comic was published on February 13, 2000 the day after Charles M Schulz died.
