Seein' Stars - Feg Murray : Celebrity Stamps 1940-1942

Seein's Stars by Feg Murray - Frederic Seymour Murray (1894 – 1973), was an American athlete who competed mainly in the 110 meter hurdles. He won a bronze medal in the 1920 Summer Olympics

After his athletic career ended, Murray became a well-known artist, writer, and cartoonist. He drew a daily comic strip called "Seein' Stars" from 1933 until 1941. A Sunday-only version continued until 1951. "Seein Stars" was a comic that focused on celerities of the time. Without television or internet, movie fans had to rely on newspaper and magazines for their movie star fix

Stamp collecting at this time was a popular hobby, it was a way to learn about foreign countries, especially for those collectors who had little chance of visiting these countries. therefore it was not unusual for the newspapers and comics to include faux stamps with their comics. this included  the comics Tommy Tailspin, Cigarette Sadie (a companion strip to Dick Tracy), Winnie Winkle (baseball stamps) Prince Valiant and others.

These stamps did not have postal validity, nor did they have adhesive backing. Their sole purpose was to be collected in scrapbooks tat were popular at the time.

Murray created 3 series of stamps:
Series 1 - May 13, 1934 - August 11, 1935 with black and white 56 designs
Series 2 - January 1, 1938 - October 29, 1938 with 224 black and white designs
Series 3 - September 8, 1940 - August 2, 1942 with 100 color designs

I do this because I enjoy trying to save history. These are difficult to find and may be expensive in excellent condition, as newspapers were not saved. If these stamps were saved they were most likely pasted into albums. Keep in mind, although pop culture is well represented on stamps issued now, politicians and historical figures were the person depicted on stamps in the 1930s and 1940s

I am not anti-digital, however I am not a fan of NFTs or digital trading cards. This is as close as I get to a digital collection, my need to visually see these stamps in one place. These are placed here for reference. I doubt I will ever be able to show all of the stamps printed, but it's a start.....
