A Charlie Brown Christmas - 50th Anniversary : 2015

2015-Oct-01 marks the 65th anniversary of the “Peanuts” comic strip and December marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most popular holiday TV classics of all time — “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” To celebrate the holiday season and launch October as National Stamp Collecting Month, the U.S. Postal Service dedicated the A Charlie Brown Christmas Forever stamps at the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, CA.

A Charlie Brown Christmas: On their way to join their friends' ice skating on a frozen pond, Charlie Brown confesses to Linus Van Pelt that, despite all the things he likes about the Christmas season, he is still depressed. After Linus' reproach, and a put-down from Violet, he visits Lucy Van Pelt's psychiatric booth and tells her his problem. She suggests he direct the group's annual Christmas play to get involved, and he accepts.

Jackie von Spanks is an illustrator who is heavily influenced by vintage pinup style of the 1940s - 1960s. Her art is heavily influenced by artists such as Gil Elvgren and Alberto Vargas. Jackie is also a pin-up model and a member of the Luscious Ladies.

When I asked for a Christmas sketch, she immediately smiled and said she know exactly what she would draw... Bettie Page, who is showing Linus how to properly trim a tree.

Page was born in 1923, in Tennessee and became a model after graduating college and moving to San Francisco. Her modeling career led to a Playboy centerfold in 1955 and icon status as a pin-up model.

Joe Simko - Garbage Pail Kids

I attended the Monsters and Robots show to obtain a few sketches from the Garbage Pail Kids' artists that were going to be in attendance... They were coming from the GPK Convention held in Las Vegas. Since I am not a collector of GPK, but an aware of the product I thought it would be great to pick up a few sketches...

As soon as I made my request of Joe Simko, he knew immediately what he was going to do. Since I do not know all of the characters, the sketch he provided of Haley's Vomit was a great surprise an pleasant surprise...

Joe Simko has contributed to Garbage Pail Kids and Wacky Packages. He is the author illustrator of the book Sweet Rot as well as creator of his own line of trading cards "Cereal Killers"
Simko also designs CD covers and posters for Rock bands...

The original concept of Haley's Vomit (also known as Inter Stella) card #318 from the 8th series, 1987, was created by Tom Bunk...

Just wanted to show 2 recent purchases, although not sketches, that have a space theme...

FDC Cover Center 1962 Christmas issue with Santa riding a rocket to the Moon. I still appreciate the simple 2 color design over the more modern full color all-over printed covers from today that hid the stamp and postmark. 

Georges Melies, was honored by France in  1961. Melies was a movie maker during the silent film age. One of his films was "A Trip to the Moon" 1902, which had strange and surreal imagery, most notably the rocket crashing into the eye of the moon..

This image was also used on a different version of the GPK's Haley Comet..

Melies vision is the primary inspiration behind the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Sleznik, published in 2007 and the movie adaptation Hugo, 2011. Both excellent...

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer first appeared in 1939 in a booklet written by Robert L. May and published by Montgomery Ward...

Rudolph would gain immortality through the song written by Johnny Marks. Recorded by many artists through the years, the first commercially successful rendition was in 1949 by Gene Autry. Other artists include Bong Crosby, Spike Jones, Dean Martin, The Temptation, Burl Ives, The Jackson 5, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the list goes on...

Rudolph would gain further popularity in 1964 when Rankin/Bass Productions aired their stop-motion animated special on CBS television, which has never left the air-waves. The story follows a dejected Rudolph and Hermey the would be dentist elf who go on travels to help the misfit toys and their adventure with Yukon Cornelius and the dangerous abominable  snowman "The Bumble"...

2014 marked the 75th anniversary of Rudolph and the 75th anniversary of the television special. A series of US postage stamps was released on November 6, featuring Rudolph and his friends. My favorite characters are Yukon Cornelius and the Bumble. I asked Jacob Chabot to draw the Bumble on the 2014 Rudolph Bumble first day cover...

Jacob Chabot is a cartoonist illustrator whose work has appeared in Nickelodeon Magazine, Savage Dragon, Marvel Comics and his own The Mighty Skullboy Army, from Dark Horse Comics. Skullboy was nominated for an Eisner Award in 20078 for Best Book for Teens...

Joe Endres - Weeping Angel Christmas

While I was speaking with Joe and Paul Castiglia (Archie Comics) at the Superhero event, I noticed a drawing Joe had done of the Weeping Angels. It had a cute Charlie Brown quality but it still evoked the fact that they were Weeping Angels, probably the scariest Alien ever!

The Weeping Angels first appeared in the Doctor Who season 3 (2007) episode Blink, created by Stephen Moffet. They would go on to appear in seasons 5, 6 and 7...

That's when i got the idea of a Weeping Angels Christmas. I asked Joe if he could do the sketch and he did not hesitate to create this great piece... Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all and don't blink !!!
