Thomas Yeates - Tarzan

I am an avid reader of the Sunday comics, and Prince Valiant has had my attention for years. I look forward to the traditional style of art and storytelling. Since it only runs on Sunday, the story has to keep the reader actively involved.

When I heard Thomas Yeates would be at this show, I would have liked to obtain a sketch of Prince Valiant. Unfortunately I do not have any blank covers on which to obtain sketches. 

I did have Yeates sign the above Prince Valiant cover for me. The choice of sketch to obtain however, was not difficult. A self-taught artist who is influenced by Hal Foster, NC Wyeth, Al Williamson and Wallace Wood, Yeates first professional work was for DC Comics in 1978 on Sgt Rock. He would continue with DC Comics' Warlord, Mystery in Space and Swamp Thing.

Moving to Eclipse, Yeates' worked on Airboy, Scout, Lugar, Brought to Light and Aztec Ace. At Pacific comics he would work on Alien Worlds and Vanguard. At T.S.R. he illustrated the Dragonlance Saga on Dungeons and Dragons.

In the 199os, Yeates drew his boyhood hero.. Tarzan of the Apes and Tarzan, The Beckoning for Malibu Comics and Dark Horse Comics

Years would also illustrated Dracula vs Zorro for Topps Comics, Tomahawk for DC, Zorro comic strip with Don McGregor, Universe X specials for Marvel comics, as well as illustrating graphic novels for Lerner Publishing featuring King Arthur, Robin Hood, Lancelot.....

I went to the show on Friday to obtain my sketches early, so on Saturday I just walked around without intention of obtaining additional sketches. I had passed the National Cartoonist Society table, which had the same artists that were there last year, so I did not give them much attention.

As I was getting ready to leave for the day, I noticed a gentleman sketching in a style similar to Moebius and I was pulled in. Turns out it was Henrik Rehr a Danish artist who draw the comic strip Ferd'nand, having taken over the strip in 1989, He signs the strip Rehr.Mik. We discussed some the work he was displaying, which included Beetle Bailey. The Walker family publishes Beetle overseas in book form. Since the daily strips seen in the US are not enough to fill the pages, Rehr takes their unused ideas and transforms them into additional Beetle Bailey strips.

Rear works in different styles depending on the content of the work, as for Moebius, he was an inspiration so when Rehr has down time, he sketches in the style of Moebius...

Brent Peeples - New Super-Man

Brent Peeples has been working in comics since 2010 and recently the artist for the DC comics' New Super-Man. Peoples also the artist for a Batman story in the Eisner Warad winning, New York Times best selling book Love is Love.

Peoples has done cover and interior work for various companies, including Dynamite, Valiant, Aftershock, IDW, Archie and Boom!

Titles featuring Peeples' work include Archer and Armstrong, Captain Kid, Grimm Fairy Tales, The Art of Red Sonja, 1001 Arabian Nights, Babyteeth, Godzilla, Star Trek-Green Lantern....

Artist is unknown, besides the name Chaczyk.. I can find little information on the artist, except that he produced a line of cachets for first day covers in the 1980s and 1990s, out of the Detroit area. This was purchased on ebay.. I am a big fan of Poe so I could not pass on this..

Ron Wilson - The Thing

Ron Wilson is known for his work with the Thing. Wilson worked with the Thing from 1975-1986 chronicling the Thing's adventures through various Marvel titles, including Marvel Two-in-One

Wilson provided covers for Marvel, including Captain America, Avengers, Daredevil, Defenders, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, Hulk, Black Goliath, Marvel Fanfare, Power-Man and Iron Man and others

He was the regular penciler on the Marvel UK Captain Britain. Wilson has also provided sketch cards for the Avengers and DC Legacy sets. For the DC Universe, Wilson penciled Milestone Media's Icon, providing character design work and pencils and on the mini-series Arion the Immortal. 

Wilson provided the art for eh cover of the second issue of the pro-wresting comic Headlocked, from Visionary Comics.

Matthew Clark - Star Trek Mugato

Prior to the show, I had looked through some of the commissions that Matthew Clark had done. Lots of Batman and Wonder Woman. Both good choices, but I get a lot of artists who want to draw them, so my preference has been to ask for villains, since they are more interesting. I asked my usual question, what would you like to draw. Matthew's response, "When I am asked to draw what I like, you will get a tribble."

I came back with I have Star Trek! - I handed over the envelope and Matthew perked up saying he already knew what to draw, but did not tell me. When I returned I was pleasantly surprised to see the Mugato, a simian-like creature with white fur, a rhino horn and sharp fangs. The character appeared in A Private Little War season 2, episode 19.

Mathew Clark originates from Portland, Oregon. A long -time fans f comics, he has had the pleasure of drawing for many of his favorite titles, including Superman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Vampirella, Ghost Rider, Doom Patrol, Outsiders and others

He is also one of the founders of Mercury Studios (Periscope Studios)

I was looking forward to obtaining a sketch from Jae, but was not sure what I should request. I did my usual and asked what he would like to draw. His response was he liked to draw monsters. I offered the Star Trek envelope and Jae immediately knew what he wanted to do...

When I went back to his booth to pick up the cover he handed me a Gorn. The Gorn appeared in 1967, Star Trek season 1, episode 18 The Arena.
