National Parks -

Independence Hall, Philadelphia - Washington FDC
Statue of Liberty, NY - Bartholdi FDC
Edison Laboratory West Orange, NJ -

I enjoy visiting National Parks. The National Parks started using a special 'cancel' to be used in a passport for visitors in 1986, Whenever I visit a park I like to bring along a first day cover to commemorate my visit and apply a related design...

Philatelic Journey was another site I set up to display first day covers used to commemorate some of my travels

Mail Art

The International Union of Mail-Artists (IUOMA) is an artistic community that consists of over 3000 members world-side. IUOMA was founded in 1988, but the populist artistic movement centered around sending small scale works through the postal service, originally developing around the 1950s... It probably goes back much further.  In the 1960's artist Ray Johnson established the New York Correspondence School, using the postal system to send out his art. Although not considered a mainstream form of art, mail-art has been featured in museums and galleries. Mail-art takes on various forms, whatever the artist chooses to post in the mail

Mail art from David Solomon - Kickstarter reward
I'm sending you this piece of mail as part of your contributions to the Making Mail Kickstarter project. I know Mike and I and everyone involved in the film greatly appreciate the support. My involvement was both unexpected and exciting. I never thought I'd be interviewed about a passion of mine.
I've been making mail for almost 4 years. I feel I've come a long way...slowly improving and discovering my personal style/voice. My latest kick is to make these collages on cardboard while enclosing the letter with paperclips and rubber bands or clear plastic. I hope you enjoy it! Thanks again. - ireallyfet.tumblr.com

March 2013, Michael Polk started a Kickstarter campaign "Making Mail: A Documentary", with the goal of making a documentary film about artists who embrace the antiquated postal service and use it to send beautiful pieces of art across the globe. Of course with the incentive of receiving an original hand-crafted piece of art made by one of the artists in the film, I jumped in...

During the second world war many soldiers and sailors decorated their letters home with hand drawn beautiful scenery or comedic touches (printed patriotic envelopes were also readily available)... Reminisce site features several envelopes drawn by a soldier to his wife waiting back home...

Fans of the Grateful Dead decorated their requests for tickets in hopes their efforts would be rewarded with a miracle (a sample is posted on the reference page) and a book showing many examples ...

James Gurney, creator of Dinotopia, has held envelope art contests for his Gurney Journey blog page. The theme is dinosaurs...

Wizard magazine used to featured a hand drawn envelope on it's letters page in every issue...

Dom Mauri - Mad Hatter

2019.10.26 Suffolk Comic & Art Expo, Brentwood, NY

Dom Mauri started his career at 16 years old. He is known primarily for his cartoon pieces and pop art, which has been displayed in many museums and art galleries

When I first saw Doom working at his booth, I was not sure his style would work on the first day cover. All of his images were dark using only black, with a loose style that looked great on large pieces. I took a chance, and I was not disappointed

Richard Comely - Captain Canuck

Captain Canuck by Richard Comely - Space Discovery FDC
2022-07-09 Garden State Comic Fest, Morristown, NJ

I have not been to a comic show/con since NYCC last October. When I read that Richard Comely, creator of Captain Canuck was going to be at the show, I knew I was going to go and obtain an autograph

Captain Canuck had been honored on a Canadian stamp in 2002, along with Superman, Nelvana, Johnny Canuck and Fleur deLys. When I handed Mr Comely the cover for his signature he mentioned that there was too little space to draw a proper image. Although I did not come to the show planning on obtaining a sketch, I did bring a few covers with me. We choose the Space Discoveries FDC from 1998, as the stamp had a science fiction feel to it

Richard Comely, is a Canadian comic book creator, artist, penciller, inker, letterer, publisher, editor.....
He created and wrote the Captain Canuck comic book series in 1975. In 2012 Comely entered into a licensing agreement for Chapterhouse Comics to produce animation, merchandise and a continuing comic book series

Captain Canuck's first appearance, 1975 was published by Comely Comix, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The story follows Tom Evans, a Canadian secret agent who gained superhuman strength from contact with extraterrestrials
Iron Man 2007 FDC postmarked with a Captain Canuck stamp, signed by Richard Comely

It was a pleasure to meet Mr Comely and had a nice conversation with him and his table mate - Fadi Hakim. I always enjoy going to a convention, where the artists are accessible and friendly to work with

S. Preston - Konni Mackenzie

2021.10.08 NY Comic Con
 Konni Mackenzie by S. Preston

It's been a while since I have had the chance to post a new sketch.

I was the fortune to attend NY Comic Con again. This year I came across the booth of S. Preston, a fantastic artist who creates minimalist stadium art and ballpark princesses. He was kind enough to draw his new original character that he hopes will help promote baseball to the girls who go to the game with their dads.

I am sure she will be affectionally called Konni Mac!
Check out his work, my wife loved this and that speaks volumes, Thanks Preston

Jose Varese - Daffy Duck aka Duck Dodgers

2019.10.26 Suffolk Comic & Art Expo, Brentwood, NY

Jose Varese's passion for art and design can be traced back to his childhood, when he was repeatedly grounded for drawing on his bedroom wall. Eventually they discovered his potential and encouraged his creativeness

Jose continued developing his skills as an illustrator, winning regional and national competitions and collaborating with local Miami artists

2009, Jose partnered with Creature Entertainment as their art director and lead artist for titles The Gun and Ravenous. Jose has also worked on projects such as The Mighty Titan, Soulfire - the Dying and the Light, Soulfire - Hope, the Faro Chronicles, Light Earth, Alpha, The Beach Chronicles, Red Sonja and Vampirella

Amidst his prints of gorgeous women and superheros, Jose eyes lit up when he saw the Daffy Duck stamp. He asked if he could provide a drawing for it and produced a proud Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2 Century. A favorite of both of ours.
