Dan Khanna - Transformers: Starscream

2014.01.26 Garden State Comic Fest. Ledgewood, NJ

Dan Khanna is  a freelance illustrator, who has penciled comic books for Dreamwave, IDW Publications, Titan UK Publications and the Transformers Collectors Club/Botcon Collectors Convention. Khanna studied at Cornell University, the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Parsons School of Design...

Khanna work has included concept and packaging design for Hasbro, hard Hero and Titan Books/Eagle Moss Publications..

Khanna can be found at may conventions surrounded by his Transformers art. Matt and I first met Khanna in 2011 at the Wizard show in New York, where he drew Starscream for Matt's Collection. Starting his Transformers with fan art, Khanna has quickly become one of the top Transformer artist on the convention scene...

When I approached Khanna, I did not remember which Transformer he did for Matt, and subsequently asked for the same sketch (like son, like father). I had picked up a few United Nations air mail first day covers with the idea of obtaining flight related sketches. Knowing Khanna would be at the Garden State Comic Fest I decided on a Starscream sketch. Starscream is the Decepticon Air Commander F-15 jet, making his first appearance in 1984 as part of the original franchise...
Khanna has a page on the Transformers Wiki...

Canaan White - Uber

Allied Troop
2013.10.11 New York Comic Con

Canaan White is the artist for the Avatar Press comic Uber, written by Kieron Gillen. The story alters the history of the second world war, where super soldiers control the fate of the battle...

Canaan White was sitting at the Avatar Press booth, when I walked by. I stopped to watch him sketch an Uber comic book cover and and was very impressed by his skill. I was not familiar with the comic, but become impressed with the story as Canaan explained it to me. I could not turn up a chance to obtain a sketch from this talented artist so I asked if he could draw on a first day cover. I chose the Inverted Jenny commemorative because I was thinking the story was taking place during the first world war instead of the second. My mistake, however Canaan's sketch of the allied soldier is wonderful.

The Inverted Jenny was an error postage stamp issued in 1918, where the image of the Curtiss Jenny bi-plane was printed upside down, in relation to the stamp border. Only 100 stamps found their way into public hands making it one of the most famous errors in US stamp collecting. The stamp has reached a value in excess of $900,000.00. In 2013 the US Postal Service decided to commemorate the famous mistake by re-issuing the stamp in a $2.00 value. The original Jenny was a 24c airmail stamp.

The Inverted Jenny made an appearance on the Simpson's during the 5th season. In Homer's Barbershop Quartet, Homer is looking through a box at a local flea market finds a full sheet of stamps and throws them back with the statement "the airplanes upside down"...

Peng Peng - Adventure Time

2013.10.12 NY Comic Con, NYC

Penelope "Peng-Peng" Gaylord likes fantasy art, cheesecake poses, mint chocolate chip ice cream, and mermaids. Finds inspiration from her husband, anime, comics and video games...

Gaylord studied graphic design at American University is currently inking Boom Studios' "Fanboys Vs Zombies" and has done an exclusive cover for "Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake" issue #1...

I was not a fan the first time I saw the Adventure Time cartoon, but my son Matt told me to give it a chance. I watched a few more episodes and now I am a fan. I wanted to obtain a sketch of Finn and Jake on a Lewis & Clark cover, which commemorates their adventure across the Western portion of the US from 1804-1806. By a wild stretch of the imagination I could picture Finn and Jake taking the roles of Lewis and Clark with Princes Bubblegum in the role of Sacagawea, as they cross uncharted territories...

Gaylord drew Finn and Jake along with Lumpy Space Princess (Peng-Peng's favorite character)...

At the site BuzzFeed Geeky, Gaylord was one of 20 female artists who provided advice for female artists fro artist alley at the 2013 NY Comic Con... Her advice "DO YOU. Don't let others tell you otherwise."

Penelope was named after the cartoon character Penelope Pitstop...
